A little house cleaning to start the year off

by JamesNYCJanuary 9. 2014 02:20

As mentioned in the our last 4 newsletters and again in direct emails to all of those on the 1ProCrew.Com Photo Production database, this past weekend I went through and deleted ALL of the user profiles that appeared to be abandoned, or those whose emails bounced back to us or elected to unsubscribe from our emails. All per the terms of service that everyone agrees to upon sign-up.

This makes it easier for all of those that take the time to create their user profiles to now be seen more often and show up higher in the search order.

In the future this process will be automated and users will be expected to interact with the 1ProCrew.Com database at least once every 6 months or their accounts will be deleted automatically.

For those that feel they were removed in error please feel free to re-add yourself to the photo production database.

Lighting - You can see it in their eyes

by JamesNYCDecember 1. 2013 02:48

As if sitting back and enjoying a decent TV or web series wasn't enough I have developed a habit of looking for lighting setups or production mistakes like boom mics showing up in shots, cables cutting through the frame or on set. But for the most part I'm interested in trying to figure out how a lighting of a shot was done.

Sometimes it's as easy as looking in the eyes or reflections in a scene. Below are two examples from the TV show 'Blacklist'. These are screen captures of: season 1 episode 8.

A large silk on a frame, looks like 1/2 stop, and probably a 2K or 4K HMI

Haitian Photographer Wins Major U.S. Copyright Victory

by JamesNYCNovember 23. 2013 11:23

Photographers have struggled financially over the last decade as millions of images have been taken and published on the Web without proper attribution or compensation. And when photographers try to pursue copyright violators, it is often difficult and expensive. On Friday, the Haitian photographer Daniel Morel won a major copyright victory after a four-year fight over images he had originally sent out via social media.

A Manhattan jury found that Agence France-Presse and its American distributor Getty Images willfully infringed upon Mr. Morel’s copyright of eight pictures he took of the 2010 Haiti earthquake and awarded him $1.22 million.

“During the earthquake, they were selling my exclusive photos for $45,” Mr. Morel said after the ruling. “This is wrong. Not only did these agencies steal the photos, but they were also giving them away.”

His photographs were originally posted on TwitPic, a website that allows users to put pictures on Twitter, by Mr. Morel hours after the earthquake on Jan. 12, 2010. It was then reposted by a Twitter user named Lisandro Suero, who claimed they were his. Agence France-Presse took the photos from TwitPic and distributed them to clients. Getty Images distributed the photos in the United States.

Here are a few key points from the interview:

the wild success of the 5D Mark II. “…totally took us by surprise,”
